Kimberley Weeds
The Kimberley Weed Project at the Western Australian Herbarium (PERTH), Department of Environment and Conservation, forms part of the national CRC Weed Management Program. The overall aim of this program is “to provide tools for a co-ordinated national approach to the assessment, management and prevention of new weed incursions.”
FloraBase information systems currently record about 236 alien taxa within the Kimberley Region of Western Australia. In this initial project, the WA Herbarium has undertaken to provide comprehensive botanical descriptions which include nomenclature, morphology, habitat and distribution for 44 alien species from the Kimberley. These species descriptions are being made available online via FloraBase, which draws information from the Herbarium's collection of databases. In addition to species information, there are images where available and extensive family and genus descriptions.
The Kimberley descriptions are drawn up from the Western Australian Herbarium information systems, preserved specimens and national and international literature, by the Weed Information Network (WIN) team. The descriptive information is entered into a DELTA database which formats them for presentation here in FloraBase. By drawing on this range of sources, the data not only reflect the features of Kimberley plants, but also of plants from their native land. Specimens provide the physical evidence for the presence, distribution and identity of plants. All of the species in this project are represented by vouchered specimens in the Herbarium's collection.
