Registering for FloraBase
Access to most areas of FloraBase is free, and no registration is required. However, access to specimen information does require registration to be lodged with the Western Australian Herbarium. The additional information available includes over 706,158 records of specimen label information and certain data for rare plants. Your registration is also useful to us:
- In order to ensure the continued maintenance of FloraBase, the Herbarium needs to show it is a useful resource. For example, we can combine the number of registered users with visitor statistics to show how popular it is and to provide information on how it is being used.
- If registered users are helping us maintain the databases (i.e. through collaboration of various kinds), then we can show that FloraBase is helping the Herbarium to maintain its databases.
- Funding from registrations will be used to fund the web site's maintenance.
- We can derive an understanding of the most popular sections of FloraBase from the registration information, and use it to tailor the site to users requirements.
Access to specimen data
Fees of $2000 are payable on an annual basis. The value of your registration increases each month as we continually maintain the currency of names, specimen labels and distribution maps, add new images and descriptions, and add new data sources to the site. A 10% Goods and Services Tax applies to FloraBase registration fees paid by Australians. Certain groups can be exempt from this tax, and this includes transactions within the Department when an internal transfer code is used.
Free access to specimen data
Free access to specimen data will be granted in certain cases subject to approval from Herbarium staff and will include such groups as:
- Community groups participating in the Regional Herbaria Network
- Students at primary, secondary or tertiary level
- Department of Environment and Conservation staff, where projects are not the subjects of external grants
- Academics and researchers, where projects are not the subjects of external grants
- Developers of biological information systems in other institutions
Free access will be granted where the applicant helps us to maintain our information repository. Applicants can ensure that registration fees are minimized or even waived completely by collaborating in a variety of ways:
- Specimen curation
- Providing vouchered plant photographs for use in FloraBase
- Inclusion of Herbarium specimen processing costs in grant applications
- Providing descriptions of taxonomic groups for inclusion in FloraBase in DELTA format. Your name would appear alongside your contribution.
- Using Max to provide databased information on disk, which saves us considerable processing time
Note: FloraBase is not designed for retrieval of large amounts of data. The Western Australian Herbarium can provide data via email attachment in HISPID and CSV format to taxonomists working on taxa in the Western Australian flora.

Note: You do not need to register unless you need access to specimen data. Should any field be inapplicable to you, please type "n/a". An additional fee of 10% GST applies to Australian residents. Fields marked with a red asterisk (e.g. *) are required fields.
