Brown marine subtidal alga, epilithic, upright, to 2 m tall; holdfast hapteroid; stipe single, terete; blade complanate, irregularly distichously branched, leathery, with smooth, corrugate, or spinous surface. Distribution: SW: GS, JF, SWA, WAR.

Thallus: (Sporophyte) Epilithic, upright, brown to light brown, to 2 m in height, with a coarse hapteroid holdfast and single, terete stipe bearing a complanate, irregularly distichously branched blade. Surface of blade smooth or corrugate, often covered with short surface spines.

Structure: With a filamentous medulla and parenchymatous cortex.

Reproduction: Sporangia borne in inconspicuous surface patches, mixed with sterile cells (paraphyses). Gametophyte phase microscopic, filamentous, the female sparsely branched with terminal eggs, the male much-branched with lateral antheridia. Life history biphasic with heteromorphic gametophyte and sporophyte.
