Green marine subtidal alga, epilithic, to 60 cm tall; holdfast discoid; erect fronds spongy, subdichotomously branched; branches mostly terete, to 10 mm diam., becoming compressed and to 2cm broad near dichotomies. Distribution: SW: JF, SWA.

Thallus: Epilithic, light to medium green, erect from a discoid holdfast, to 60 cm in height. Fronds spongy, subdichotomously branched, with axes mostly terete and to 10 mm in diameter, but becoming compressed and to 2cm broad near dichotomies.

Structure: Coenocytic, with a medulla of branched, interwoven filaments bearing a cortex of inflated utricles, the medullary filament plugged near the bases of utricles. Utricles cylindrical to clavate, 130-700 μm diameter near apices and 450-2500 μm long, with thin or slightly thickened walls. Hairs or hair scars often numerous. Gametangia elongate-ovoid, several per utricle.
