Red marine subtidal alga, epilithic, to 30 cm tall; base stoloniferous; upright axes percurrent, densely covered with radially branched determinate laterals. Structure uniaxial with three periaxial cells, primary axes corticated, otherwise uncorticated. Distribution: ER: CAR, PIL; SW: GS, SWA.

Thallus: (Gametophyte) Epilithic, upright, dark brown-red to grey-pink, to 30 cm tall, with a proliferous stoloniferous base giving rise to several percurrent primary axes densely clothed with irregularly radially branched laterals (giving the appearance of ‘foxtails’), the density of branching increasing towards the apex.

Structure: Uniaxial, with three periaxial cells per axial cell, uncorticated in lateral determinate branches but corticated in primary axes.

Reproduction: Spermatangia on short, clavate branches. Cystocarps obvious, pedicellate. Tetrasporangial phase (‘Falkenbergia’ stage) diminutive, tufted, uniaxial with three periaxial cells, uncorticated. Tetrasporangia cruciately divided. Life history triphasic, with free-living, heteromorphic gametophyte and tetrasporophyte.
